Borovicka – Juniper Spirit

The juniper spirit was requested by innkeepers from Prague. For us, this spirit symbolised a cheap tipple mixed cold using juniper flavouring. The most popular one – and the cheapest – has been made for decades only a few kilometres from our distillery. And so we decided: yes to juniper spirit: but the real, Slovak one, where it is considered the national drink.

We bought all available brands and started testing. The results were catastrophic. Almost every bottle had the following ingredients: alcohol, juniper flavouring, sugar. And all of them tasted awful.

And so we made our version. Two kinds of juniper berries – blue from Slovakia and red from Italy. Maceration in the finest alcohol from Kojetín, slow distillation. The final spirit is then diluted by purified water and filtered. And that’s it. No flavourings, no oils, no sugar.

The first bottling took place on 14 September 2011. We began importing the Borovička to Slovakia in 2015 – and it became our importer’s best-selling beverage of 2016. The Borovička gained cult status and it is currently the most popular and finest juniper spirit available in Slovakia. A product that changed the rules of the game and returned this type of spirit to the reputable world of bartending.
